The lightest possible headwear is a great idea until you whack your dome and get concussed. Luckily for the safety-minded, the Smith Summit Helmet is uncompromising in protection while incorporating all the features we expect in a touring helmet.
The lightest possible headwear is a great idea until you whack your dome and get concussed. Luckily for the safety-minded, the Smith Summit Helmet is uncompromising in protection while incorporating all the features we expect in a touring helmet. From a safety standpoint, the Summit meets the standard EN 1077 (skiing) and EN 12492 (mountaineering) certifications of dual-certified helmets but goes above and beyond by meeting the more rigorous ASTM F2040 US-based certification* and includes MIPS (a technology that further helps to mitigate brain injury by redirecting rotational forces during angled impacts). MIPS is a technology that has proven itself in climbing, biking, and alpine skiing helmets, and we are excited to see it implemented in more lightweight, dual-certified touring helmets.
Moving on to the touring features, the Summit Helmet saves weight by using Zonal Koroyd for impact protection, which is an ultralight aerospace impact absorber that behaves like a crumple zone in your car and is 95% air by volume. A BOA Fit System that is made just for Smith helmets is micro-adjustable, comfortable, and folds easily into the helmet for carrying on your pack. 33 strategically placed vents keep air moving through and an included beanie liner can be swapped in for colder days. Whether you're worried about head injuries or skiing hard enough that you know you should be, the Smith Summit Helmet seeks to provide safety and reliability in the backcountry.
